Protecting democracy
ATHENA will contribute to the protection of the democratic process by empowering the EU and its citizens to detect, analyse, and counter foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI).
The Internet provides fertile ground for the disruption of democratic processes via the mass spread of disinformation.
Several countries have exploited the Internet to wage campaigns of disinformation in Europe. These campaigns have the intent of disrupting democratic processes for their political and economic benefit. There is an urgency for the EU to combat foreign information manipulation and interference (FIMI) to protect our infrastructures, economies, values and democracies.
ATHENA works to combat FIMI through:
- Improved detection of FIMI.
- Reviewing and developing FIMI countermeasures.
- Sharing novel methods with policymakers, academics, educators and the public.
We want to work together towards a safer, fairer and more secure future.
Aims:
- Review the FIMI landscape.
- Analyse the short and long-term behavioural and societal effects of FIMI.
- Novel technical tools: Disinformation toolbox and dashboard.
- Training on FIMI detection.
- Policy recommendations and public awareness programmes.
